Even for us in this industry, it's easy to take for granted running water and toilets. We all know that a lot of work goes into building and maintaining our systems (that's what we do every day) but 95% of the time it works when we need it. This TED talk reminds us of how important this work is, and how lucky we are to have such advanced systems. Even basic sanitation makes lives so much better. Favorite quote: "Sanitation is more about dignity than human disposal of waste."

We were excited when the Northeast Water Professionals Association asked us to present at their quarterly meeting this last Wednesday April 29, 2015 in Kaukauna! We decided to present a new and improved version of our Preparing for SCADA presentation. It had been a while since we have given this presentation, so I gave the whole thing a fresh look. I really went through and edited the slides, moved around some of the sections, and added a whole new remote monitoring section. The basic idea is to go through each level of a SCADA system. Each level builds on the next, and each is just as important as the last to ensuring that the whole system works. I really like this presentation. A lot of times when we talk about a SCADA system, we're referencing just the very top levels of the pyramid - the computer and maybe the PLC. But SCADA systems actually start at the very basic level, where our process equipment is telling us what actually is happening in the physical world. Without that base level operating correctly, everything above it is completely irrelevant.
It was a great day at the meeting. The only thing I wish is that I could have had Todd, Josh, or Bill join me. They always have such interesting stories and real life experience to add to this presentation. But the reality of the service schedule set it, and I did my best solo. Next time we'll have to get one of them there for sure! |
