25th WRWA Annual Technical Conference

3/28/2013

I feel like I'm always going on about the greatness of the WRWA Annual Technical Conference in Green Bay.  Now that I've been documenting it for a few years, I've got a lot of proof.  Here I am talking about 2010 (remember the great artist Josh?), apparently I was excellent in taking pictures in 2011 (with crazy curly hair), and last year we had a lot of luck, both at the conference and the dinner.  This year, we were looking forward to celebrating the 25th Anniversary of WRWA.  A lot of really great things happened twenty-five years ago (cough - me - cough), and WRWA starting out was one of them.  It's really amazing how developed and successful the organization has become for how relatively young it is.

The week was busy and great.  We were honored to be nominated for Business of the Year award this year.  Although we didn't win, we thought it was pretty cool to be nominated.  We were very impressed with the Opening Session speakers, a couple of players from the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team.  If you ever get a chance, go see these guys.  After that, the expo hall kept us very busy until it closed around 6.  We really enjoyed seeing so many familiar faces.  Thursday brought more of the same - pleasantly busy, lots of great conversations, with not a lot of down time.  Seeing as I am seem to be getting worse at the taking pictures aspect of my job, thankfully WRWA snapped one of us at the booth.  Thank you!

Later that night came the Theme Dinner.  While we seemed to have used up all of our luck on last year’s raffle, we did enjoy giving away a Half Day Guided Bass Fishing on Mississippi River Pools and $250 Cabela's Gift Card to Len Heimerman from Valders.  Everyone’s looking forward to some fishing on the Mississippi River once it finally warms up this summer!

Overall, we were not surprised to find ourselves happy with the week.  Thanks to everyone at WRWA - the staff, Board, Conference Committee, Sportsman's Raffle/Wisconsin Rural Water Foundation - for making this conference and organization what it is.

Chicago Water Tower

On a recent trip to Chicago, we were totally impressed with this water tower that looks like a castle.

I'm not often nostalgic for the old times (I really like the internet, cell phones, and GPS), but old architecture, both inside and out, will get me every time.  Buildings were just made with such thought and exquisite detail.  Seriously, check out this guy at night:
It might not be the tallest or biggest, but it definitely is a star in Magnificent Mile.  It was built in 1869 to provide clean water pumped from Lake Michigan to the city.  At that time, it towered above all the other buildings in the area.  Unfortunately, the bins from which it pumped eventually became polluted, and the tower was functionally obsolete in 1906.  Yet more than 100 years later, after surviving the Great Fire and multiple demolition attempts, it still stands.  In 1969, the American Water Works Association named it as one of their first American Water Landmarks.  It is now home to a local photography gallery and is a Chicago historical treasure.  Definitely worth checking out next time you're downtown.
