Isn't that a pretty old lamp? Once upon a time, that was the latest technology in the wastewater field. Lamps like this were installed in many locations across the U.K. where sewer gas, particularly dangerous methane and other gasses, was known to build up. The gas generated by the sewer was released through the lamp, burning a small flame. As a result, these lamps were known as "gas destructor lamps."
