A few weeks ago, I came across an article that discussed ancient water systems. While Rome's aqueducts and sewers are among the most famous, peoples across the world had their own solutions. Although a lot of the systems are inadequate compared with our modern westernized systems, it's pretty remarkable what was developed pre-industrialization. In fact, some ancient water systems are in use today. After the collapse of the Soviet Union and faced with insurmountable bills to maintain the pipes and electric pumps, Azerbaijan returned to using their ancient water supply system.
