Fix A Leak

Looks like I missed Fix A Leak week (March 18-24 - we were busy at WRWA that week!), but I thought this was a cute video to share.

The Wisconsin DNR has a lot of great information on their website for fixing leaks to save water.  As we all go cabin fever crazy with this awful weather, maybe this is a good time to think about getting some of this done.  Here's some of the ideas from the WDNR site.

Check your toilet for silent leaks

1. Put a few drops of food coloring into the tank of your toilet.
   
2. Wait 15 minutes without flushing
   
3. If colored water appears in the bowl within 15 minutes, you have a leak.
   
4. Make sure to flush the colored water as soon as the test is done. Food coloring can stain.

More ways to be water smart

1. • Check for dripping faucets,shower heads, and fixture connections.
   • Check irrigation systems and outdoor spigots too.
   • Use your water meter to check your whole house. Read your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter changes at all, you probably have a leak.

Twist and tighten pipe connections

1. • Some leaks can be fixed by tightening connections.
   • To save more water without a noticeable difference in flow, twist on a WaterSense labeled faucet aerator.

Replace the fixture if necessary

1. • Look for WaterSense labeled models.
   • These are independently tested and certified to use 20 percent less water and perform as well as or better than standard models.
