Last week we posted the most common questions we get about cross connection inspections. Hand in hand with cross connection inspections are backflow preventers - here are the most common questions about them!

What is a backflow preventer device? A backflow preventer device is a plumbing fixture that prevents contamination of water supplies by means of cross connections. They are installed in locations required by the state, and cannot be removed. 

How do I know if I have one? Backflow preventers are required to be registered with the state. You can look it up online, or if you don’t have yours tested the state will send you a letter reminding you to do so. Their appearance varies by type and manufacturer, but here is a common one:

What is a backflow preventer test? On a backflow preventer device, the first check, the second check, and the relief valve are checked via a test kit. 

Why are backflow preventer tests required? Backflow preventers are devices that are preventing nonpotable, used, unclean, polluted, or contaminated water or other substance to enter a potable water system. Annual tests ensure that the devices continue to work as intended. 

How often is it required? Backflow preventer devices are required to be tested once every year. The test results are registered with the state by the tester.
