Thanks! To The Unsung Heroes of Day to Day Life

Labor Day is kind of an interesting holiday, isn't it?  While there are all sorts of holidays, there are only a select few that warrant a day off of work for most workers.  It seems to me that most of our "important" holidays fall into two categories - religious (Christmas, Easter) and days of remembrance (Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving).  And then there's Labor Day.  There's a bit of remembrance, as it "is a creation of the labor movement" but for the most part, the day is meant "to be dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers.  It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country" (US Dept. of Labor).

There's a lot of professions that get praise, rightly so, for their contributions.  Police officers, firefighters, the military, and hospital workers are just a few of the professions that I wouldn't want to live one day without.  But public works workers, particularly in water and wastewater, have some of the largest and most important day to day impact on Americans everywhere.  It is so easy to take for granted clean water and working sanitary facilities that is provided to the public, but just a look around the world reminds us of our fortune.

You, as wastewater and water operations specialists, are always on call.  We know, because we are honored to be the ones you call for more help when you have that emergency in the middle of the night, weekend, or holiday.  Day in and day out, those in our industry work to make sure that these basic needs never even enter into the public minds as a concern.  So on this Labor Day, we just want to salute the unsung heroes of our day to day life - the water and wastewater system operations specialists.  Thanks!  Happy barbecuing!
